1.Serenity(平靜)

Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom. It is the result of long and patient effort in selfcontrol, Its presence is an indication of ripened experience, and of a more than ordinary knowledge of the laws and operations of thought.

心靈的平靜是智慧的寶藏,它來自於長期、耐心的自我控制。內心的安寧是經歷成熟的表現,也是對思想活動規律的更深入的了解。

A man becomes calm in the measure that he understands himself as a thought evolved being, for such knowledge necessitates the understanding of others as the result of thought, and as he develops a right understanding, and sees more and more clearly the internal relations of things by the action of cause and effect he ceases to fuss and fume and worry and grieve, and remains poised, steadfast, serene.

一個人能否心境平和,取決於他對自己的了解程度,因為如果他想了解別人,就必須先了解自己;當他對人對己有了更深入的了解,並越來越清晰地洞察到事物內部息息相關的因果關係時,他就不會再驚訝、憤怒、焦慮或憂愁,而是以從容、鎮定、平和的態度去對待一切。

The calm man, having learned how to govern himself, knows how to adapt himself to others; and they, in turn, reverence his spiritual strength, and feel that they can learn of him and rely upon him. The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. Even the ordinary trader will find his business prosperity increase as he develops a greater selfcontrol and equanimity, for people will always prefer to deal with a man whose demeanor is strongly equable.

鎮靜的人知道怎樣控制自己,也知道如何去適應與他人相處;反之,別人也會對他的人格魅力表示尊重,並會以他為榜樣,認為他是個可靠的人。一個人越是處變不驚,他的成就、影響力和號召力就越大。即使是一個普通商人,如果他遇事能夠很好地自我控制並鎮定自若,那麼他會發現自己的生意蒸蒸日上;因為人們總是更願意與一個舉止從容、沉著冷靜的人打交道。

The strong, calm man is always loved and revered. He is like a shadegiving tree in a thirsty land, or a sheltering rock in a storm. "Who does not love a tranquil heart, a sweettempered, balanced life?" It does not matter whether it rains or shines, or what changes come to those possessing these blessings, for they are always sweet, serene, and calm. That exquisite poise of character, which we call serenity is the last lesson of culture, the fruitage of the soul. It is precious as wisdom, more to be desired than gold — yea, than even fine gold. How insignificant mere money seeking looks in comparison with a serene life, a life that dwells in the ocean of truth, beneath the waves, beyond the reach of tempests, in the eternal calm!

"How many people we know who sour their lives, who ruin all that is sweet and beautiful by explosive tempers, who destroy their poise of character, and make bad blood! It is a question whether the great majority of people do not ruin their lives and mar their happiness by lack of selfcontrol. How few people we meet in life who are well balanced, who have that exquisite poise which is characteristic of the finished character!"

Yes, humanity surges with uncontrolled passion, is tumultuous with ungoverned grief, is blown about by anxiety and doubt. Only the wise man, only he whose thoughts are controlled and purified, makes the winds and the storms of the soul obey him.

是的,人性因為無法控制的激情而躁動不安,因為放任無度的悲傷而起伏波動,因為焦慮和猜疑而備受打擊。只有睿智的人,只有控制並凈化了思想的人,才能在心靈的世界里呼風喚雨。

Tempesttossed souls, wherever ye may be, under whatsoever conditions ye may live, know this in the o cean of life the isles of blessedness are smiling, and the sunny shore of your ideal awaits your coming. Keep your hand firmly upon the helm of thought. In the bark of your soul reclines the commanding master; he does but sleep; wake him. Selfcontrol is strength; right thought is mastery; calmness is power. Say unto your heart, "Peace, be still!"

2.Freedom(自由)

It is not only true that most people entirely misunderstand Freedom, but I sometimes think I have not yet met one person who rightly understands it. The whole Universe is absolute Law. To the degraded or undeveloped — and even to too many others — the thought of freedom is a thought of escaping from law — which, of course, is impossible. More precious than all worldly riches is Freedom — freedom from the painful constipation and poor narrowness of ecclesiasticism — freedom in manners, habiliments, furniture, from the silliness and tyranny of local fashions — entire freedom from party rings and mere conventions in Politics — and better than all, a general freedom of oneself from the tyrannic domination of vices, habits, appetites, under which nearly every man of us (often the greatest brawler for freedom), is enslaved. Can we attain such enfranchisement —the true Democracy, and the height of it? While we are from birth to death the subjects of irresistible law, enclosing every movement and minute, we yet escape, by a paradox, into true free will. Strange as it may seem, we only attain to freedom by a knowledge of, and implicit obedience to law. Great — unspeakably great — is the Will! The free Soul of man! At its greatest, understanding and obeying the laws, it can then, and then only, maintain true liberty. For there is to the highest, that law as absolute as any — more absolute than any — the Law of Liberty. The shallow, as intimated, consider liberty a release from all law, from every constraint. The wise see in it, on the contrary, the potent law of Laws, namely, the fusion and combination of the conscious will, or partial individual law, with those universal, eternal, unconscious ones, which run through all Time, pervade history, prove immortality, give moral purpose to the entire objective world, and the last dignity to human life.

大部分人不僅徹底曲解了「自由」的含義,更可怕的是,我有時覺得還沒有見過一個能恰當了解「自由」的人。整個宇宙是一個亘古不變的法則。對於墮落和愚昧無知的人,甚至芸芸眾生來說,自由就是避開法律,而這肯定是不能實現的。比世俗的所有財富更珍貴的是自由,自由意味著從教會神學的痛苦禁閉和悲觀的狹隘中脫離出來;自由意味著在禮儀、服飾、傢具上的隨心所欲;自由意味著從地方流行的愚蠢和束縛中脫離出來;自由意味著徹底從黨派小圈子和政治運作的舊例中脫離出來;其中最為重要的是,當我們每個人差不多都(我們常常大聲叫喊著要自由)受控於罪惡、惡習、慾望時,自由意味著自我從奴役的嚴酷壓迫中徹底脫離出來。我們可以獲得這樣的自由嗎?自由是真正的民主,高度的民主。從出生到死亡,這無法阻擋的法則都在束縛著我們,束縛著我們的一舉一動、分分秒秒。可是,說起來有些矛盾,我們卻一直想方設法要逃脫,擁有真正的自由意志。奇怪得很,唯有學習法則並默默地服從法則,我們才能獲得自由。意志是偉大的!人類自由的靈魂是偉大的!偉大得無法形容。當意志力達到完美,理解並服從法則,那時候,僅僅是那時候,人們才能獲得真正的自由。這是因為自由的法則無比高尚。同其他法則一樣絕對,不,比其他法則還要絕對。膚淺的人認為自由意味著從一切法則的約束中脫離出來。而智者則截然相反,他們從中意識到了威力無窮的眾法之法,它是有意識的意志力、局部的個人準則與通用的、持久的、沒有意識的法則的融合。而這種法則經歷了所有時代,寫進了整個歷史,被證明是恆久不變的。這種法則為整個客觀世界指明了道德方向,為人類的生活保證了最後的尊嚴。

3.What Is Immortal(什麼是不朽)

To see the golden sun, the azure sky, the outstretched ocean; to walk upon the green earth, and be lord of a thousand creatures ; to look down yawning precipices or over distant sunny vales; to see the world spread out under one's feet on a map ; to bring the stars near; to view the smallest insects through a microscope; to read history, and consider the revolutions of empire and the successions of generations; to hear the glory of Tyre, of Sidon, of Babylon, and of Susa, and to say all these were before me and are now nothing; to say I exist in such a point of time, and in such a point of space; to be a spectator and a part of its evermoving scene; to witness the change of seasons, of spring and autumn, of winter and summer; and to feel hot and cold, pleasure and pain, beauty and deformity, right and wrong; to be sensible to the accidents of Nature; to consider the mighty world of eye and ear; to listen to the stock-dove's notes amid the forest deep ; to journey over moor and mountain; to hear the midnight sainted choir; to visit lighted halls,or the cathedral's gloom, or sit in crowded theatres and see life itself mocked ; to study the works of art and refine the sense of beauty to agony; to worship fame, and to dream of immortality; to look upon the Vatican, and to read Shakespeare; to gather up the wisdom of the ancients, and to pry into the future; to listen to the trump of war, and the shout of victory; to question history as to the movements of the human heart; to seek for truth; to plead the cause of humanity; to overlook the world as if time and Nature poured their treasures at our feet — to be and to do all this and then in a moment to be as nothing — to have it ail snatched from us as by a juggler's trick, or a phantasmagoria!

4.Gettysburg Address(林肯葛斯底堡演說)

Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

八十七年前,我們的先輩們在這個大陸上創立了一個新的國家,她孕育於自由的理念之中,奉行一切人生來平等的原則。

Now, we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper.that we should do this.

It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation,under God, shall have a new birth of freedom ; and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

5.On Pleasure(自由如歌般歡樂)

Pleasure is a freedom song, but it is not freedom. It is the blossoming of your desires; but it is not their fruit, it is a depth calling unto a height; but it is not the deep nor the high, it is the caged taking wing; but it is not space encompassed. Ay, in very truth, pleasure is a freedom song. And I fain would have you sing it with fullness of heart; yet I would not have you lose your hearts in the singing.

And your body is the harp of your soul, and it is yours to bring forth sweet music from it or confused sounds.

And now you ask in your heart, "How shall we distinguish that which is good in pleasure from that which is not good?" Go to your fields and your gardens and you shall learn that it is the pleasure of the bee to gather honey of the flower, but it is also the pleasure of the flower to yield its honey to the bee, for to the bee a flower is a fountain of life, and to the flower a bee is a messenger of love, and to both, bee and flower, the giving and the receiving of pleasure is a need and an ecstasy.

現在你們捫心自問:「我們將怎樣區別快樂沖的善與惡呢?」去你們的田野和花園,你們就會明白蜜蜂的快樂在於採集花蜜,對於花朵而言,給蜜蜂提供花蜜就是快樂。因為蜜蜂視花朵為生命之泉,而花朵視蜜蜂為愛之使者,對於兩者而言,蜜蜂與花朵,給予與接受的快樂是一種需要,一種醉人心扉的喜悅。

6.We Stand on the Same Starting Point(同一起跑線上的我們)

「We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite...」

I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it.We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just like a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

我不知道這段文字是誰寫的,我一直很喜歡並用它來提醒自己,那就是未來操之在我。我們可以掌握神秘而不可知的未來,從中創造出我們所能想象的任何東西,如雕刻家可以將未成型的石頭刻出雕像一樣。

We are all in the position of the farmer.If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest.If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop.If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

我們每個人都是農夫。我們若種下好種子,就會豐收。倘若種子長得不良且長滿雜草,我們就會徒勞無獲。如果我們什麼也不種,就會一無所獲。

I want the future to be better than the past.I don』t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled.We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the reminder of our lives.

我希望未來會比過去更好。我不希望未來會被那些充斥在歷史中的錯誤所污染。我們應該關心未來,因為往後的餘生都要在未來中度過。

The past is gone and static.Nothing we can do will change it.The future is before us and dynamic.Everything we do will effect it.Each day will brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our businesses, if we will only recognize them.We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

往昔已一去不復返而且是靜止的。任憑我們怎麼努力都不能改變過去。未來就在我們眼前而且是動態的。我們的所作所為都會影響未來。只要我們體會得出來,每天都可以發現新的知識領域伴隨而生,可能是在家裡,也可能是在我們的事業中。我們正處在人類所努力鑽研的每個領域中進步的起點。
