前幾天，我在這房間里
在藍色四壁間來回跳蕩，
從打字機跳到鋼琴，
從書架彈到地板上的一個信封，
我發現自己落入了詞典的「L」部，
眼光落在了「Lanyard」（編織結）上。
法國小說家嘴裡啃的小甜餅①
把人送回昔日也遠不如這麼快。
那個昔日，我正在
阿迪龍達克湖邊的野營地
坐在工作凳上學用塑料帶打編織結，
作為送給媽媽的禮物。
我從沒見過編織結有什麼用，
假如它是戴的，也沒見過人佩戴。
但這不妨礙我反反覆復一股穿一股
直到為媽媽編成一方紅白相間的編織結。
她給我生命還給我哺乳，
而我回報她一個編織結。
她多次在病房裡看護我，
一匙一匙往我嘴裡喂葯，
用冷毛巾敷我的額，
然後把我領向大自然
教我走路和游泳而我回贈她一個編織結。

「給你千餐萬餐，」她說，
「給你衣著和良好的教育。」
「給你一個編織結，」我答——
「是我做的，輔導老師稍微給了點幫助。」
「給你一個呼吸的身體，一顆跳動的心，
強壯的腿、骨和牙，一雙明亮的眼睛閱讀世界。」她悄聲說。
「這個，」我說，「是我在野營做的編織結。」
「這個，」我現在想對她說，
「是件小得多的禮物，而不是那古老的真理——
母親的恩你永遠報不盡，
但我得慚愧地坦承：當媽媽從我手裡接過雙色編織結的那刻，
我以一個孩子的心確信
這件我為解悶編的無用也無價值的小玩意兒
已足以把我們扯平。」

The other day as I was ricocheting slowly
off the blue walls of this room
bouncing from typewriter to piano
from bookshelf to an envelope lying on the floor,
I found myself in the 'L' section of the dictionary
where my eyes fell upon the word, Lanyard.
No cookie nibbled by a French novelist
could send one more suddenly into the past.
A past where I sat at a workbench
at a camp by a deep Adirondack lake
learning how to braid thin plastic strips into a lanyard.
A gift for my mother.
I had never seen anyone use a lanyard.
Or wear one, if that's what you did with them.
But that did not keep me from crossing strand over strand
again and again until I had made a boxy, red and white lanyard for my mother.
She gave me life and milk from her breasts,
and I gave her a lanyard.
She nursed me in many a sick room,
lifted teaspoons of medicine to my lips,
set cold facecloths on my forehead
then led me out into the airy light
and taught me to walk and swim and I in turn presented her with a lanyard.
'Here are thousands of meals' she said,
'and here is clothing and a good education.'
'And here is your lanyard,' I replied,
'which I made with a little help from a counselor.'
'Here is a breathing body and a beating heart,
strong legs, bones and teeth and two clear eyes to read the world.' she whispered.
'And here,' I said, 'is the lanyard I made at camp.'
'And here,' I wish to say to her now,
』is a smaller gift. Not the archaic truth,
that you can never repay your mother,
but the rueful admission that when she took the two-toned lanyard from my hands,
I was as sure as a boy could be
that this useless worthless thing I wove out of boredom
would be enough to make us even.'

比利·科林斯（Billy Collins），1941年生於美國紐約曼哈頓，就讀於聖十字學院並獲英文專業學士學位，後於加州大學河濱分校取得英文專業的碩士和博士學位，長期任紐約城市大學萊曼學院高級教授。迄今共出版了十六本詩集，多次獲獎。2001年至2003年任美國桂冠詩人。科林斯被《紐約時報》譽為「美國最受歡迎的詩人」。他常常會被拿來與羅伯特·弗羅斯特相比較，這大概是一個美國詩人能得到的最高讚美了。與弗羅斯特相似，他的詩堅定地不裝腔作勢，機智並絲毫不陷入粗鄙，善於對生活日常事件作深刻精微洞見。

飛白，全名汪飛白，1929年出生於杭州。1949年未待從浙江大學外文系畢業即參加革命工作。1980年辭軍職回校，任杭州大學/浙江大學中文系教授、美國爾賽納斯學院（Ursinus College）英文系客座教授、雲南大學外國語學院教授。譯著有《詩海——世界詩歌史綱》（上下卷）、《詩海遊蹤：中西詩比較講稿》《古羅馬詩選》《誰在俄羅斯能過好日子》《法國名家詩選》《馬雅可夫斯基詩選》《勃朗寧詩選》《哈代詩選》《英國維多利亞時代詩選》（上下卷）等二十五卷，主編《世界詩庫》（十卷）《汪靜之文集》《世界名詩鑒賞辭典》等十九卷，參與《世界詩庫》中拉丁文及英法西俄荷等十餘個語種的詩翻譯和評介。獲十餘種國家級獎項，並享有國務院的特殊津貼。
