【範文】The Effects of Television on Communication

There is no doubt that television has greatly changed people's lives. After its invention, it became an almost indispensable part of most households within the space of just a few years. Nowadays, many families have two or even three television sets so that every member of the family can watch what he wants whenever he wants. In my opinion, this has significantly reduced the amount of time that family and friends spend communicating with each other.

Before the invention of television, people spent their leisure time in more active and social pursuits. They often played cards or other games, listened to the radio together or went out to see friends. But now television is widely available and it offers a variety of program choices that appeal to almost every interest. People no longer have to look to others for entertainment. Also, television can be like a sedative. Studies have shown that watching a great deal of television makes people more passive. Finally, people are simply watching increasing amounts of television. And with two or three TV sets in the house, there is no need for them to even watch it together.

Although television has reduced the amount of time that family and friends spend together, it doesn't have to be this way. People can make the choice to turn off the TV and do something more active. Or, if they really want to watch TV, they can find a thought-provoking program that they would all like to watch and discuss afterwards.

In almost every form of media， including television， newspapers and magazines， a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of celebrities. It seems that the public cannot get enough of this kind of news. However， I believe that the media have a responsibility to present a balanced view of the world， as well as respect the lives of public figures. Therefore， I believe that the media pay too much attention to the personal lives of famous people.

For people who are fascinated with the lives of public figures there are some forms of media devoted exclusively to this topic. They can satisfy their curiosity by buying fan magazines and watching TV shows devoted to entertainment news. The general media should present all types of information because people have different interests. Furthermore， the practice of dwelling on the private lives of celebrities can lead people to pay more attention to these matters than they otherwise would. Perhaps most importantly， the media should respect the privacy of every individual， including public figures. They may have chosen to be in the public eye， but that does not give the public the right to know everything about them. Moreover， many stories about celebrities are untrue； they are only gossip reported to increase sales of magazines and other media. They are unfair to the famous and mislead the public.

For all of these reasons， I believe that the media should pay more attention to matters other than the private lives of public figures. In this way， they can appeal to a wider audience and encourage people to develop other interests. In my opinion， the media currently pay too much attention to the private lives of public figures.

幾乎每一種媒體，包括電視、報紙和雜誌，都把許多焦點放在名人的私生活上。一般大眾似乎對這種新聞一直很感興趣。然而，我認為媒體有責任以公正無偏袒的觀點報導時事，以及尊重公眾人物的生活。因此，我認為媒體的確過度關注名人的私生活。

Staying in One Place

It is often said that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Perhaps this is why some people frequently move around, looking for better jobs, houses, and so on. No doubt it is possible to make some advances in this way, but I believe that staying in one place and putting down roots in a community also has many advantages. That is why I would prefer to spend my life in one place rather than constantly move around in search of a new home.

One advantage of spending a lifetime in the same community is that people can put down roots and enjoy long relationships with their friends and neighbors. As these relationships mature, the neighbors will come to trust and depend on each other more. In such a community, one never needs to worry when in trouble; someone is bound to give a hand. Another advantage is that people who live their lives in the same community care more about the neighborhood and work hard to improve it. This creates a nicer place for everyone to live. Finally, while we should never stop trying to improve ourselves, it is sometimes better to appreciate the advantages we already have than constantly seek more. A person who is always seeking will never be content.

In brief, I would prefer to have a permanent home in one community rather than constantly uproot myself and my family in search of something better. I believe that when we care about the place where we live we can always find a way to improve it and ourselves. In the future I will remember to appreciate the grass on my side of the fence.

If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you change? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

If I could change one thing about my hometown, I think it would be the fact that there's no sense of community here. People don't feel connected, they don't look out for each other, and they don't get to know their neighbors.

People come and go a lot here. They change jobs requently and move on. This means that they don't put down roots in the community. They don't join community organizations and they're not willing to get involved in trying to improve the quality of life. If someone has a petition to put in a new streetlight, she has a very hard time getting a lot of people to sign.

They don't feel it has anything to do with them. They on't get involved in improving the schools because they don't think the quality of education is important to their lives. They don't see the connection between themselves and the rest of their community.

People don't try to support others around them. They don't keep a friendly eyes on their children, or check in on older folks if they don't see them for a few days. They're not aware when people around them may be going through a hard time. For example, they may not know if a neighbor loses a loved one. There's not a lot of community support for individuals.

Neighbors don't get to know each other. Again, this is because people come and go within a few years. So when neighbors go on vacation, no one is keeping an eye on their house. No one is making sure nothing suspicious is going on there, like lights in the middle of the night. When neighbors' children are cutting across someone's lawn on their bikes, there's no friendly way of casually mentioning the problem. People immediately act as if it's a major property disagreement.

My hometown is a nice place to live in many ways, but it would be much nice if we had that sense of community.
