According to a recent study conducted by researchers at YokohamaNational University in Japan, an ingredient used in McDonald'sbeloved potato sticks could potentially help cure baldness. Thestudy, which was published in the Biomaterials journal, found thatthe ingredient dimethylpolysiloxane (an anti-foaming agent made ofsilicone added to the oil used to cook the fries) might open thedoor to improved hair regrowth therapies.

The study focuses on the large-scale transportation of hairfollicles to areas where there is no hair. Researchers useddimethylpolysiloxane as part of an "oxygen permeable" solution toprepare 5,000 hair follicle germs.

The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journalBiomaterials, involved using dimethylpolysiloxane in a formula toready 5,000 hair follicle germs, which "were shown to be capable ofefficient hair-follicle generation upon intracutaneoustransplantation into the backs of nude mice."

The chemical was used as a base to grow the follicles — itdoesn't trigger hair growth on its own. In other words, thechemical helped the process, but in and of itself did not spark agrowth spurt of hair.

"This simple method is very robust and promising,」 Fukuda said.「We hope this technique will improve human hair regenerativetherapy to treat hair loss such as androgenic alopecia (malepattern baldness). In fact, we have preliminary data that suggestshuman HFG formation using human keratinocytes and dermal papillacells."
